IT in health care

The Knowledge Foundation wants to coordinate skills and resources in health care with the help of information technology. Medical expertise can be quickly accessed with the help of IT regardless of the geographical distance. Shared communication platforms also facilitate the development of smoothly functioning chains of health care service.

In 1997, the Knowledge Foundation and the Federation of Swedish County Councils decided to jointly fund the development of a national platform for information and communication in health care. The goal was to create a comprehensive health care network in the long term for the entire health care sector. Each party contributed 75 million Swedish kronor to the programme, which was to run for three years. The aim of the investment was to achieve better quality of care, better nursing, increased productivity and lower costs.

In 2001, the Knowledge Foundation and the Vardal Foundation for Health Care Sciences and Allergy Research decided to continue the project together. In phase two, 65 million Swedish kronor was invested. The goal now is to develop better cooperation in regional transport for long-distance health care, home nursing and care for the elderly.

Swedish Brain Power is a multidisciplinary research project dealing with neuro-degenerative diseases. Neurologically-related diseases like dementia, stroke, Alzheimer’s and burnout mean great suffering for both patients and their families. The costs to society are also quite considerable.

With the help of IT, among other things, expertise in different research groups, clinics and companies is linked up. With basic research and applied research in health care being conducted together, earlier diagnoses can be made and better treatment can be provided. The programme will produce effects for both Swedish research and businesses working in medicine and care for the elderly.
